Door County, Wisconsin

The following statement is the original report submitted by "BJ" to Squatch Inc.

"I just started talking about this experience this week.  I had my sighting 5 years ago and kept it to myself for fear of ridicule.  But, the experience has haunted me and I now have to talk about it.

I used to live in Door County, Wisconsin.  This sighting happened in 2003 in a small town called Forestville, near Sturgeon Bay.  Door County is in Northeast Wisconsin.  I lived in the woods with a huge pond across the street….no neighbors.  I lived on a private road called Sleepy Hollow Dr. (it isn’t on any maps because it is private).

It was an early Spring afternoon and I was walking down the driveway to get my mail from my mailbox.  I heard sounds coming from a thicket beside my house.  The sounds were like nothing I had ever heard before.  I am a nature buff and am very familiar with the sounds of the forest.  It was a grunting..snorting sound and I remember thinking to myself, “why is there a man in my woods making that noise?”.  The sound was not like any animal I had ever heard , but, it wasn’t completely human sounding either….something totally foreign.  I peered through the brush and all I could see was the top of its’ back.  It was hunched over doing something with a tree.  It was very large and hairy and the hair color was REDDISH BROWN.  I walked around the thicket and walked up to the top of our septic mound so I could look down into the thicket and get a better view.  I could not see it, but, it apparently caught my scent because it immediately started to charge at me.  I could not see it but I could hear it as I ran for my back door.  And, I heard it thud up against some downed trees on the edge of the thicket.  By the noise it was making I can tell you that if it had caught me I would not be sitting in this chair writing this right now.   I know what I heard and what I saw and I am not crazy."

Follow up:

After phone and e-mail correspondance with B.J. it is of the opinion of Squatch Inc. that she has had an encounter with a creature that fits the description of a Bigfoot type animal.  She has taken the liberty of contacting the WI Dept. of Natural Resources and they have told her that there are no bears in Wisconsin that display the "reddish brown" hair she witnessed on the creature.  The sounds and actions displayed by the creature such as the bluff charge are also indicative of Sasquatch behavior. The following is a "Q and A" with the witness:

Squatch Inc.: "Do you recall being witness to any other strange or odd occurrences that stand out in your mind either before or after your interaction with the creature?"

B.J.: "I have been trying to remember if there were any strange occurrences around the time of my experience.

What I can add is this:

We lived in the woods with no neighbors.  I had many wild animals come through my yard.  I would put corn out for the deer and the wild turkeys.  They would come almost to my door together to eat the corn.  So, I would watch them from inside my house.  There were times when something would “spook” them all at one time and they would scatter immediately.  I was never able to figure out what would do that because there were no humans outside to scare them.

Also, at times when I was outdoors I would hear what sounded like something being hit against trees."

Squatch Inc.: "Any smells that caught your attention that day? Day's previous or to follow?"

B.J.: "I don’t remember any strange odors."

B.J. also added this to her report:

"After that experience I always took my dogs outside with me, so I felt a little more secure.  Plus, I had convinced myself that it had to be a bear.  But, after 5 years of not being able to let it go, I finally called the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources from here in Texas. They told me that what I saw could not have been a bear because all Wisconsin bears are black and never go through a phase of “reddish brown”.  What I saw was definitely reddish brown in color.  If I had called the DNR right after that experience I might not have had the courage to continue to live there."

B.J. only had this one encounter while living at the residence in Door County.  She now resides in Texas.
